Bruce Meyer and Derek Wu will lead an effort to examine the trajectory of employment rates among working-aged men since the 1960s and identify policy options to increase male employment rates. They will measure the extent to which employment declines are related to demand factors (such as evolving economic conditions) or supply factors (such as the availability of income from public programs, opioid use, or incarceration). The project’s findings will appear in a series of research papers.
Ariel Kalil and Susan Mayer will research and write a book exploring how parents can help their children develop the skills that they need to succeed in school and later in life. They will synthesize research on the skills gap that exists between children from disadvantaged and more advantaged families and the extent to which that gap shapes children’s success later in life, and assess the effectiveness of a variety of interventions that can help parents play more effective roles in developing their children’s cognitive and noncognitive skills.
Chad Syverson and Austan Goolsbee will lead an effort to examine productivity growth rates in a variety of industries and identify steps policymakers could take to increase productivity growth. The project’s findings will appear in a series of papers.
